A Tense Distortion: Variation in the use of the present perfect in Spain

Diana M. Carter

In the present study, data from the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) is analyzed according to grammatical conditions such as the Past Adverb Constraint, the 24 hour Rule, Current Relevance, and Continuative Interpretation, in order to observe whether or not there is evidence of the constraints in the participants' responses. The findings support the grammatical conditions for the use of the present perfect in Spain.
