A non-unified treatment of -ing

Elizabeth Cowper

Abstract

In this paper, I argue that there are two morphemes in English with the phonological shape -ing. Assuming the treatment of -en that I have proposed in earlier work (Cowper 1991b, 1993), the existence of two -ing morphemes predicts that there ought to be six distinct surface manifestations of -ing. I will show that all six of these possibilities are attested in English.
